AVOIDING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

AVOIDING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Text: Ephesians 5:28-29
“So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church.”

Supporting Text: Colossians 3:19
“Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.”

INTRODUCTION:
Domestic violence is a grievous evil that destroys homes, injures hearts, and defiles the will of God for families. It comes in many forms—physical abuse, emotional manipulation, verbal attacks, sexual assault, and financial control. God’s design for marriage is based on love, respect, and peace. The home should be a place of comfort and security, not fear and conflict.

No one has the right to abuse another, especially not within the sacred covenant of marriage. As Christians, we must learn to avoid, condemn, and rise above every form of domestic violence.

1. WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behaviour in a relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner or family member. It can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, or background.

Forms of Domestic Violence include:

Physical abuse – Hitting, slapping, punching, kicking, OR to physically harming someone.

Emotional abuse – Insults, constant criticism, manipulation, or threats to undermine a person's self-worth.

Sexual abuse – Any unwanted sexual activity, including rape or being forced into sexual acts.

Economic abuse – Controlling finances, withholding money, or preventing someone from working.

Psychological abuse – Intimidation, threats of harm, or isolating a person from friends and family.

2. UNDERSTAND THAT LOVE IS A DIVINE COMMAND

Love is not a suggestion; it is a command from God. True love does not hurt or abuse. When a man loves his wife, and when a wife honours her husband, peace reigns.

Illustration: In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, love is described as patient, kind, not easily provoked, and not violent. A violent home is a loveless home.

3. RESPECT EACH OTHER’S DIFFERENCES

Conflict often arises when couples try to force uniformity instead of embracing unity in diversity. Respect allows room for healthy dialogue and peaceful resolution of differences.

Illustration: In Genesis 2:18, God created Eve as a help meet, not a punching bag. Her difference complemented Adam’s need.

4. LEARN TO COMMUNICATE WITHOUT AGGRESSION

Poor communication is a major trigger of domestic violence. Raising your voice, using abusive words, or giving silent treatment are forms of emotional harm.

Illustration: Proverbs 15:1 says, “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” Jesus, even when falsely accused, remained calm and composed.

5. DEAL WITH ANGER BEFORE IT DESTROYS YOU

Uncontrolled anger is a time bomb. The Bible warns against letting the sun go down on your wrath. When anger rules the heart, violence becomes inevitable.

Illustration: Cain killed Abel out of unchecked anger (Genesis 4:5-8). The result was tragedy and a curse.

6. INVITE GOD INTO YOUR FAMILY DAILY

Homes that worship together experience more peace. When Christ is at the centre of the marriage, there will be patience, forgiveness, and kindness.

Illustration: Joshua declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). A home that honours God will reject violence.

CONCLUSION:
Domestic violence is a sin. It is not just a crime against man but also a rebellion against God’s order for the home. No excuse—anger, stress, or provocation—justifies abuse. Love is stronger than violence, and forgiveness is more powerful than revenge. Let us build homes of peace, not war.

ALTAR CALL:
If you are struggling with anger or bitterness, or if your home is filled with strife, come to Jesus. He alone can heal broken hearts and restore peace.
Say: “Lord Jesus, I surrender my life and my heart to You. Forgive me for my sins. Heal my soul and my home. Come into my life and be my Saviour and Prince of Peace. Amen.”

PRAYER POINTS:

1.  Father, thank You for designing the home to be a place of peace.

2.  Lord, deliver every family from the spirit of violence and strife.

3.  Father, fill our hearts with genuine love and understanding.

4.  Lord, give me grace to communicate peacefully and patiently.

5.   Father, let Your presence rule in my home every day.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS:

1.  You shall not experience violence in your home again.

2.  The peace of God will flood your heart and household.

3.  Every spirit of abuse and rage is banished from your life.

4.  Your marriage will be an example of heaven on earth.

5.  From today, your home shall be filled with joy, love, and understanding.

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Genesis 2:24
Supporting Texts: Ruth 1:16-17, Exodus 18:17-24, Matthew 19:5-6, Romans 12:18

INTRODUCTION:

Marriage is not just a union between two individuals but also brings families together. While extended family relationships can be a source of blessing, they can also create tension if not handled wisely. The Bible provides principles on how to honour parents and in-laws while maintaining the integrity of the marital relationship. In this message, we will explore how couples can set healthy boundaries and maintain peace in their dealings with in-laws and extended family.

1. THE BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE OF LEAVING AND CLEAVING

  • a) Marriage establishes a new family unit (Genesis 2:24)
    • A man must leave his parents and unite with his wife to form a new family.
  • b) Cleaving requires prioritising your spouse (Matthew 19:5-6)
    • A strong marital bond is built on commitment and unity.
  • c) Boundaries must be established with love (Ephesians 5:31)
    • Couples should honour their parents while setting clear marital priorities.
  • d) Interference can weaken the marriage bond (Proverbs 25:17)
    • Too much involvement from in-laws can lead to conflicts.
  • e) Biblical Example: Abraham and Sarah
    • Abraham obeyed God by leaving his father’s house, which allowed him to focus on his family and God’s purpose (Genesis 12:1-4).

2. HONOURING PARENTS AND IN-LAWS WITH WISDOM

  • a) Honouring parents is a commandment (Exodus 20:12)
    • God expects us to respect our parents even after marriage.
  • b) Honour does not mean blind obedience (Matthew 10:37)
    • Loyalty to God and marriage should come first.
  • c) Seek counsel but make independent decisions (Exodus 18:17-24)
    • Moses listened to Jethro’s advice but made his own choices.
  • d) Avoid taking sides in conflicts (Proverbs 15:1)
    • Couples should be peacemakers between their spouse and extended family.
  • e) Biblical Example: Ruth and Naomi
    • Ruth honoured her mother-in-law but prioritised her new life with Boaz (Ruth 1:16-17).

3. SETTING HEALTHY BOUNDARIES WITH LOVE

  • a) Boundaries protect the marriage relationship (Song of Solomon 2:15)
    • Small interferences can destroy unity if not controlled.
  • b) Discuss and agree on family interactions (Amos 3:3)
    • Couples should communicate their expectations regarding in-laws.
  • c) Respectfully communicate boundaries (Colossians 4:6)
    • Boundaries should be explained with wisdom and love.
  • d) Limit financial dependence on extended family (Proverbs 22:7)
    • Uncontrolled financial obligations can create tension.
  • e) Biblical Example: Jacob and Laban
    • Jacob had to set boundaries with Laban to protect his own family (Genesis 31:25-55).

4. DEALING WITH DIFFICULT IN-LAWS PEACEFULLY

  • a) Seek to live in peace with all (Romans 12:18)
    • Even difficult in-laws should be treated with kindness.
  • b) Respond with patience and wisdom (Proverbs 15:1)
    • A gentle response can diffuse tension.
  • c) Pray for God’s intervention (Philippians 4:6-7)
    • Prayer changes situations and hearts.
  • d) Involve spiritual or neutral counsel when needed (Matthew 18:16)
    • If conflicts persist, seek wise counsel.
  • e) Biblical Example: Hannah and Peninnah
    • Hannah endured Peninnah’s provocations with patience and prayer (1 Samuel 1:6-10).

5. BALANCING FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS AND MARRIAGE

  • a) Spouse must always come first (Ephesians 5:25)
    • A husband’s primary duty is to love and protect his wife.
  • b) Encourage positive relationships with in-laws (1 Peter 3:8-9)
    • Peaceful relationships bless the marriage.
  • c) Handle family traditions wisely (Colossians 2:8)
    • Cultural practices should not override biblical principles.
  • d) Recognise when to say ‘no’ (Galatians 1:10)
    • Pleasing extended family at the expense of the marriage is dangerous.
  • e) Biblical Example: Moses and Zipporah
    • Moses’ marriage faced challenges from his family, but he remained focused on his mission (Exodus 4:24-26).

CONCLUSION:

Dealing with in-laws and extended family requires wisdom, love, and balance. While marriage calls for a new beginning, it does not mean cutting off family ties. The key is to honour parents and in-laws while prioritising the marriage relationship. With prayer, communication, and boundaries, peace can be maintained in the family.

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Proverbs 22:7
Supporting Texts: Luke 14:28, Ecclesiastes 7:12, Malachi 3:10, 1 Timothy 6:10

INTRODUCTION:

Finances are one of the major areas that can bring harmony or tension in marriage. Poor financial management has caused many marriages to suffer conflict and even break down. However, when couples follow biblical principles in handling money, they experience peace, stability, and financial growth. God expects husbands and wives to be good stewards of the resources He provides. This sermon will explore key principles of financial management in marriage.

1. THE IMPORTANCE OF FINANCIAL UNITY IN MARRIAGE

  • a) Money should not divide the home (Mark 3:25)
    • A divided house cannot stand; financial unity is key in marriage.
  • b) Transparency in financial matters builds trust (2 Corinthians 8:21)
    • Hiding income or debt from a spouse creates problems.
  • c) Money is a tool, not a master (1 Timothy 6:10)
    • Love of money leads to destruction, but proper management brings peace.
  • d) Planning together strengthens marital unity (Amos 3:3)
    • Couples must agree on financial goals to avoid conflicts.
  • e) Biblical Example: Ananias and Sapphira
    • Their dishonesty in financial matters led to their downfall (Acts 5:1-10).

2. BUDGETING AND FINANCIAL PLANNING

  • a) A budget prevents financial crisis (Luke 14:28)
    • Wise financial planning ensures resources are well managed.
  • b) Prioritise needs over wants (Proverbs 21:20)
    • Saving and avoiding wastefulness leads to financial stability.
  • c) Avoid unnecessary debt (Proverbs 22:7)
    • Debt makes one a servant to the lender; wise spending prevents bondage.
  • d) Create financial goals as a couple (Habakkuk 2:2)
    • Writing down and working towards financial goals leads to progress.
  • e) Biblical Example: Joseph in Egypt
    • Joseph planned and saved during years of plenty, which secured the future (Genesis 41:33-36).

3. SAVING AND INVESTING WISELY

  • a) Saving secures the future (Proverbs 6:6-8)
    • The ant teaches us the wisdom of saving for tough times.
  • b) Investing multiplies resources (Matthew 25:14-30)
    • The parable of the talents encourages financial growth through wise investment.
  • c) Do not put all financial trust in uncertain riches (1 Timothy 6:17)
    • Trust in God, not just in money, for financial security.
  • d) Diversify income sources (Ecclesiastes 11:2)
    • Having multiple streams of income helps prevent financial struggles.
  • e) Biblical Example: The Proverbs 31 Woman
    • She managed finances well, invested wisely, and provided for her household (Proverbs 31:16, 27).

4. GIVING AND TITHING IN MARRIAGE

  • a) Giving opens doors for blessings (Luke 6:38)
    • A generous giver receives back in abundance.
  • b) Tithing brings divine protection and provision (Malachi 3:10)
    • Faithful tithing secures financial increase and rebukes the devourer.
  • c) Supporting the needy pleases God (Proverbs 19:17)
    • Giving to the less privileged brings divine reward.
  • d) Agree on financial giving as a couple (2 Corinthians 9:7)
    • God loves a cheerful giver; couples should give willingly.
  • e) Biblical Example: The Widow of Zarephath
    • Her act of giving to Elijah brought supernatural provision (1 Kings 17:12-16).

5. AVOIDING COMMON FINANCIAL MISTAKES IN MARRIAGE

  • a) Do not live above your means (Proverbs 13:7)
    • Avoid the pressure of impressing others at the expense of financial peace.
  • b) Avoid financial secrecy (Ephesians 4:25)
    • Hiding financial decisions from a spouse breeds distrust.
  • c) Do not allow money to replace love (Ecclesiastes 5:10)
    • Money is important, but love and unity should be the priority.
  • d) Do not neglect financial education (Proverbs 4:7)
    • Learning about financial management leads to better decisions.
  • e) Biblical Example: The Rich Fool
    • His failure to plan wisely and seek God’s will led to his destruction (Luke 12:16-21).
