INTRODUCTION:
Finances are one of the major areas that can bring harmony or tension in marriage. Poor financial management has caused many marriages to suffer conflict and even break down. However, when couples follow biblical principles in handling money, they experience peace, stability, and financial growth. God expects husbands and wives to be good stewards of the resources He provides. This sermon will explore key principles of financial management in marriage.
1. THE IMPORTANCE OF FINANCIAL UNITY IN MARRIAGE
- a) Money should not divide the home (Mark 3:25)
- A divided house cannot stand; financial unity is key in marriage.
- b) Transparency in financial matters builds trust (2 Corinthians 8:21)
- Hiding income or debt from a spouse creates problems.
- c) Money is a tool, not a master (1 Timothy 6:10)
- Love of money leads to destruction, but proper management brings peace.
- d) Planning together strengthens marital unity (Amos 3:3)
- Couples must agree on financial goals to avoid conflicts.
- e) Biblical Example: Ananias and Sapphira
- Their dishonesty in financial matters led to their downfall (Acts 5:1-10).
2. BUDGETING AND FINANCIAL PLANNING
- a) A budget prevents financial crisis (Luke 14:28)
- Wise financial planning ensures resources are well managed.
- b) Prioritise needs over wants (Proverbs 21:20)
- Saving and avoiding wastefulness leads to financial stability.
- c) Avoid unnecessary debt (Proverbs 22:7)
- Debt makes one a servant to the lender; wise spending prevents bondage.
- d) Create financial goals as a couple (Habakkuk 2:2)
- Writing down and working towards financial goals leads to progress.
- e) Biblical Example: Joseph in Egypt
- Joseph planned and saved during years of plenty, which secured the future (Genesis 41:33-36).
3. SAVING AND INVESTING WISELY
- a) Saving secures the future (Proverbs 6:6-8)
- The ant teaches us the wisdom of saving for tough times.
- b) Investing multiplies resources (Matthew 25:14-30)
- The parable of the talents encourages financial growth through wise investment.
- c) Do not put all financial trust in uncertain riches (1 Timothy 6:17)
- Trust in God, not just in money, for financial security.
- d) Diversify income sources (Ecclesiastes 11:2)
- Having multiple streams of income helps prevent financial struggles.
- e) Biblical Example: The Proverbs 31 Woman
- She managed finances well, invested wisely, and provided for her household (Proverbs 31:16, 27).
4. GIVING AND TITHING IN MARRIAGE
- a) Giving opens doors for blessings (Luke 6:38)
- A generous giver receives back in abundance.
- b) Tithing brings divine protection and provision (Malachi 3:10)
- Faithful tithing secures financial increase and rebukes the devourer.
- c) Supporting the needy pleases God (Proverbs 19:17)
- Giving to the less privileged brings divine reward.
- d) Agree on financial giving as a couple (2 Corinthians 9:7)
- God loves a cheerful giver; couples should give willingly.
- e) Biblical Example: The Widow of Zarephath
- Her act of giving to Elijah brought supernatural provision (1 Kings 17:12-16).
5. AVOIDING COMMON FINANCIAL MISTAKES IN MARRIAGE
- a) Do not live above your means (Proverbs 13:7)
- Avoid the pressure of impressing others at the expense of financial peace.
- b) Avoid financial secrecy (Ephesians 4:25)
- Hiding financial decisions from a spouse breeds distrust.
- c) Do not allow money to replace love (Ecclesiastes 5:10)
- Money is important, but love and unity should be the priority.
- d) Do not neglect financial education (Proverbs 4:7)
- Learning about financial management leads to better decisions.
- e) Biblical Example: The Rich Fool
- His failure to plan wisely and seek God’s will led to his destruction (Luke 12:16-21).
