GOD'S BLUEPRINT FOR MARRIAGE

GOD'S BLUEPRINT FOR MARRIAGE

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Genesis 2:18-24
"And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him... Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."

Supporting Texts: Ephesians 5:22-33, Proverbs 18:22, 1 Peter 3:7, Malachi 2:14-16, Matthew 19:4-6

INTRODUCTION

Marriage is a divine institution established by God from the beginning of creation. It is meant to be a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, designed to reflect God's love and purpose. However, in today's world, many marriages struggle due to a lack of understanding of God's blueprint.

In this sermon, we will explore the biblical principles that define a successful and godly marriage. When couples follow God's design, their marriage becomes a source of joy, fulfilment, and divine blessing.

1. MARRIAGE IS GOD'S DESIGN, NOT MAN'S INVENTION

God created marriage as a sacred institution, not a social contract.

a) Marriage Originated from God
Genesis 2:18 shows that God saw man's need for companionship and created Eve for Adam.

b) Marriage is a Covenant, Not a Contract
Malachi 2:14-16 describes marriage as a covenant that must be honoured before God.

c) Marriage is Between One Man and One Woman
Matthew 19:4-6 reaffirms that marriage is a union ordained by God, and no man should separate what God has joined together.

d) Marriage is a Reflection of Christ and the Church
Ephesians 5:31-32 explains that marriage is a mystery that symbolises Christ’s relationship with the Church.

e) Biblical Example: Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:18-24)
God Himself brought Eve to Adam, establishing the divine order of marriage.

2. THE HUSBAND’S ROLE IN MARRIAGE

The husband is called to be a loving leader in the home.

a) The Husband Must Love His Wife as Christ Loves the Church
Ephesians 5:25 commands husbands to love their wives sacrificially.

b) The Husband Must Lead with Wisdom and Honour
1 Peter 3:7 instructs husbands to dwell with their wives with understanding and honour them.

c) The Husband Must Provide and Protect
1 Timothy 5:8 states that a man who does not provide for his family is worse than an unbeliever.

d) The Husband Must Be a Spiritual Leader
Joshua 24:15 declares that a man must lead his household in serving the Lord.

e) Biblical Example: Abraham (Genesis 18:19)
God chose Abraham because He knew he would lead his household in righteousness.

3. THE WIFE’S ROLE IN MARRIAGE

The wife is called to be a loving helpmate and nurturer.

a) The Wife is a Helper Suitable for Her Husband
Genesis 2:18 states that God made the woman to be a help meet for the man.

b) The Wife Must Submit to Her Husband’s Leadership
Ephesians 5:22-24 teaches that wives should submit to their husbands as unto the Lord.

c) The Wife Must Build Her Home with Wisdom
Proverbs 14:1 declares that a wise woman builds her house, while a foolish one tears it down.

d) The Wife Must Show Respect and Honour
1 Peter 3:1-2 encourages wives to win their husbands over with godly conduct.

e) Biblical Example: Ruth (Ruth 3:1-11)
Ruth demonstrated submission, wisdom, and virtue in her relationship with Boaz.

4. KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE

A godly marriage requires intentional effort from both partners.

a) Love and Commitment Must Be Unconditional
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 describes true love as patient, kind, and enduring.

b) Communication is Essential for Understanding
Proverbs 15:1 teaches that a soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.

c) Forgiveness and Grace Must Be Practiced Daily
Colossians 3:13 instructs us to forgive one another just as Christ forgave us.

d) Intimacy and Unity Must Be Cultivated
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 highlights the strength of a threefold cord, representing God in the marriage.

e) Biblical Example: Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18:24-26)
They worked together in ministry and exemplified unity in marriage.

5. GUARDING AGAINST ATTACKS ON MARRIAGE

The devil seeks to destroy godly marriages, but couples must be vigilant.

a) Beware of Infidelity and Emotional Affairs
Hebrews 13:4 states that marriage must be honoured, and the bed kept pure.

b) Avoid Financial Mismanagement and Conflicts
Proverbs 22:7 warns that the borrower is servant to the lender, highlighting the importance of financial wisdom.

c) Resist the Influence of Ungodly Counsel
Psalm 1:1-2 advises against walking in the counsel of the ungodly.

d) Pray Together and Stay Spiritually Strong
Matthew 18:19-20 emphasises the power of agreement in prayer.

e) Biblical Example: Job and His Wife (Job 2:9-10)
Despite their struggles, Job remained faithful, showing that a marriage must stand firm in faith.

CONCLUSION

Marriage is a divine institution that must be built on God’s foundation to succeed. When husbands and wives embrace their God-given roles, love each other unconditionally, and put God at the centre, their marriage will flourish. Let us commit to following God's blueprint for marriage and experience His blessings in our homes.

MARITAL BREAKTHROUGH AND FRUITFULNESS

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Genesis 1:28
"And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."

Supporting Texts: Genesis 2:18, Psalm 113:9, Isaiah 34:16, Malachi 2:15, Hebrews 13:4

INTRODUCTION
Marriage is an institution ordained by God, and it is His will that every marriage enjoys breakthrough and fruitfulness. However, many face challenges such as marital delays, barrenness, and crises that hinder their joy and fulfillment. The enemy often fights marriages to stop God's purpose, but through faith, prayer, and obedience to divine principles, every marital yoke can be broken, and fruitfulness can be established.

1. GOD’S DESIGN FOR MARRIAGE AND FRUITFULNESS
God created marriage to be a blessing, not a burden.

a) Marriage is God’s Idea
God saw that it was not good for man to be alone, so He instituted marriage (Genesis 2:18).

b) Fruitfulness is a Divine Mandate
From the beginning, God commanded man to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28).

c) Marriage is for Companionship and Support
Marriage provides love, partnership, and emotional support (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

d) God Desires Godly Offspring from Marriage
One of God's purposes for marriage is to raise godly children (Malachi 2:15).

e) Biblical Example:
Adam and Eve were the first married couple, and God blessed them with fruitfulness (Genesis 4:1-2).

2. HINDRANCES TO MARITAL BREAKTHROUGH AND FRUITFULNESS
Many factors can delay marriage and hinder fruitfulness.

a) Spiritual Attacks and Ancestral Curses
Some families experience marital delays and barrenness due to foundational issues (Lamentations 5:7).

b) Negative Pronouncements and Covenants
Evil words spoken against a person can hinder their marriage (Numbers 23:23).

c) Lack of Faith and Impatience
Doubt and fear can delay the manifestation of God’s promises (Hebrews 11:6).

d) Disobedience to Divine Principles
Wrong relationships, immorality, and lack of prayer can hinder breakthroughs (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).

e) Biblical Example:
Rachel was barren until God remembered her and opened her womb (Genesis 30:22-24).

3. KEYS TO MARITAL BREAKTHROUGH
To experience a breakthrough, we must apply biblical principles.

a) Seek God’s Will in Marriage
A godly spouse is a blessing from the Lord (Proverbs 18:22).

b) Engage in Fervent Prayer and Fasting
Spiritual battles are won through prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21).

c) Break Every Evil Covenant and Curse
Deliverance from foundational yokes brings freedom (Galatians 3:13).

d) Walk in Holiness and Obedience
A godly lifestyle attracts divine favour (Psalm 84:11).

e) Biblical Example:
Isaac married Rebekah through divine guidance, and their marriage was blessed (Genesis 24:12-27).

4. KEYS TO MARITAL FRUITFULNESS
God has provided keys for fruitfulness in marriage.

a) Stand on God’s Promises for Fruitfulness
The Word of God guarantees fruitfulness (Exodus 23:26).

b) Reject Every Negative Medical Report
God’s power is greater than any medical condition (Luke 1:37).

c) Engage in Prophetic Declarations and Thanksgiving
Speaking life into your situation activates divine intervention (Romans 4:17-21).

d) Serve God Faithfully
Fruitfulness is a reward for service (Exodus 23:25-26).

e) Biblical Example:
Hannah was barren, but through prayer and faith, she gave birth to Samuel (1 Samuel 1:9-20).

5. MAINTAINING MARITAL BREAKTHROUGH AND FRUITFULNESS
After receiving your breakthrough, guard it with wisdom.

a) Keep Your Marriage Aligned with God’s Purpose
A Christ-centered home remains blessed (Joshua 24:15).

b) Stay in the Place of Prayer and Worship
Continuous communion with God sustains blessings (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

c) Avoid Negative Confessions
Speak life over your marriage and family (Proverbs 18:21).

d) Honour Your Spouse and Walk in Love
Love and respect keep marriage fruitful (Ephesians 5:22-28).

e) Biblical Example:
Zechariah and Elizabeth remained faithful in service, and God blessed them with John the Baptist (Luke 1:5-13).

DEALING WITH MARITAL CHALLENGES

TITLE: DEALING WITH MARITAL CHALLENGES

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Ephesians 5:22-33
Supporting Texts: Colossians 3:18-19, 1 Peter 3:1-7, Genesis 2:24

INTRODUCTION:
Marriage is a sacred institution ordained by God, meant to bring joy, companionship, and fulfillment. However, no marriage is immune to challenges. Marital issues can arise from differences in backgrounds, personalities, expectations, or life pressures. This study aims to provide biblical insights and practical steps to address and overcome marital challenges, fostering a strong, loving, and enduring relationship.

1. UNDERSTANDING THE ROOT CAUSES OF MARITAL CONFLICT

a) Unrealistic Expectations
When couples expect perfection or assume that their spouse should fulfill all their needs, disappointments can arise. Realistic expectations are essential for a healthy marriage (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

b) Communication Breakdowns
Poor communication often leads to misunderstandings and resentment. Learning to communicate openly and lovingly can resolve many issues (Proverbs 18:13).

c) Unforgiveness and Resentment
Holding onto past wrongs can create bitterness in marriage. Forgiveness is necessary for healing and restoration (Ephesians 4:32).

d) Differences in Backgrounds and Values
Cultural, religious, or personal differences can create friction, especially if not handled with respect and understanding (Romans 14:19).

Biblical Example: Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 16:1-6) – Sarah's impatience and Abraham’s compliance led to a conflict that affected their marriage, showing how unresolved issues can escalate.

2. MAINTAINING LOVE AND RESPECT IN MARRIAGE

a) Love as a Foundation
Love is the core of marriage. Husbands and wives are called to love each other deeply, as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).

b) Respect and Honour
Respect is essential for both partners. Wives are called to respect their husbands, and husbands to honour their wives (1 Peter 3:7).

c) Expressing Appreciation
Regularly expressing gratitude and appreciation strengthens the marital bond and enhances trust (Proverbs 31:28-29).

d) Prioritising Time Together
Spending quality time nurtures intimacy and understanding between spouses (Song of Solomon 2:10-13).

Biblical Example: Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18:1-3, 18-19, 26) – They worked together as a team, demonstrating love, respect, and unity in both ministry and marriage.

3. FORGIVENESS AND HEALING IN MARRIAGE

a) Letting Go of Past Hurts
Unforgiveness can hinder marital growth. Couples must choose to let go of past wrongs and strive for healing (Colossians 3:13).

b) Seeking Reconciliation
Humility and a willingness to apologise can repair broken trust and restore relationships (Matthew 5:23-24).

c) Praying for One Another
Prayer fosters a spirit of unity and invites God’s healing into the marriage (James 5:16).

d) Being Patient and Understanding
Allowing time for healing and being understanding towards each other’s flaws can renew the marital bond (1 Corinthians 13:4-5).

Biblical Example: Hosea and Gomer (Hosea 3:1-3) – Hosea’s forgiveness toward Gomer reflects God’s love and the possibility of restoration even in difficult circumstances.

4. ESTABLISHING GODLY PRINCIPLES IN MARRIAGE

a) Making God the Center
A marriage rooted in faith is strengthened by God’s wisdom and guidance (Ecclesiastes 4:12).

b) Living in Submission to One Another
Ephesians 5:21 teaches mutual submission, creating a balanced and respectful relationship.

c) Financial Stewardship
Financial disagreements can strain marriages. Practicing financial transparency and stewardship reduces conflict (1 Timothy 6:10).

d) Prioritising Family over External Influences
Protecting the sanctity of marriage by avoiding inappropriate relationships and focusing on family strengthens unity (Genesis 2:24).

Biblical Example: Mary and Joseph (Matthew 1:18-25) – Joseph’s decision to protect and support Mary during challenging times demonstrates commitment and trust in God’s plan.

5. SEEKING COUNSEL AND SUPPORT

a) Seeking Godly Counsel
Consulting wise and experienced individuals can offer fresh perspectives and guidance (Proverbs 11:14).

b) Engaging in Marriage Enrichment Activities
Marriage retreats, seminars, or counselling can be beneficial in strengthening bonds and addressing issues constructively (Proverbs 27:17).

c) Building a Supportive Community
Surrounding the marriage with supportive family and friends creates a positive environment for growth (Galatians 6:2).

d) Setting Boundaries
Establishing boundaries with family, friends, and work helps protect the marriage from unnecessary strain (Genesis 2:24).

Biblical Example: Moses and Zipporah (Exodus 18:13-27) – Jethro’s advice to Moses helped balance his responsibilities, showing the importance of seeking counsel and setting healthy boundaries.

CONCLUSION:
Every marriage will encounter challenges, but with commitment, understanding, and reliance on God’s Word, couples can overcome these difficulties. Applying biblical principles can strengthen the foundation of marriage, helping couples navigate through challenges together. It is vital to keep God at the center, practice forgiveness, communicate openly, and seek support when needed. Marital challenges, when handled wisely, can be a means for growth, maturity, and deeper love.

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Father, thank You for the gift of marriage. Grant us wisdom to handle marital challenges.

2. Lord, strengthen our love for each other and keep us united in all things.

8. Father, guide us to seek godly counsel and support when we need it.

9. Lord, establish our home on Your Word, bringing peace and harmony.

10. Father, may our marriage be a testimony of Your love and faithfulness.

10. I declare that your marriage will glorify God and inspire others in Jesus’ name.

SECRETS OF A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE

SECRETS OF A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Ephesians 5:22-33
Supporting Texts: Genesis 2:24, Proverbs 24:3-4, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

INTRODUCTION:
Marriage is a sacred institution ordained by God from the beginning of creation. It is meant to be a lifelong union, filled with love, commitment, and mutual respect. However, sustaining a successful marriage requires intentionality, wisdom, and adherence to biblical principles. In this sermon, we will explore the secrets that lead to a thriving and fulfilling marriage, as revealed in Scripture.

1. LOVE AS CHRIST LOVED THE CHURCH

a) Selfless Love:
Ephesians 5:25 calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church. This love is sacrificial, placing the needs of one’s spouse above personal desires.

b) Unconditional Love:
Love in marriage should not depend on circumstances or feelings. It should be unconditional, just as Christ's love for us is unfailing.

c) Nurturing Love:
Christ’s love is nurturing, helping the Church to grow in purity. Similarly, spouses should support each other’s spiritual and emotional growth.

Biblical Example: Christ’s love for the Church is the ultimate model of love in marriage, a love that forgives, heals, and restores.

2. MUTUAL RESPECT AND HONOUR

a) Respect for Roles:
Ephesians 5:22-24 speaks of the wife’s submission to her husband, which is a form of respect and honour. At the same time, husbands are called to lead with love, not domination.

b) Honouring Each Other’s Value:
1 Peter 3:7 reminds husbands to give honour to their wives as co-heirs of the grace of life. Both partners should recognise each other’s worth and contribution to the marriage.

c) Building Up, Not Tearing Down:
Proverbs 12:4 says a virtuous wife is a crown to her husband. Respecting one another includes speaking life into the marriage and avoiding words or actions that tear down.

Biblical Example: Ruth honoured Boaz, and in turn, he respected and protected her, leading to a prosperous union (Ruth 3:10-11).

3. COMMUNICATION AND UNDERSTANDING

a) Open and Honest Communication:
Communication is key to a successful marriage. Ephesians 4:15 encourages us to speak the truth in love, creating an atmosphere where both partners feel heard and understood.

b) Active Listening:
James 1:19 teaches us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Listening attentively to your spouse shows respect and fosters understanding.

c) Resolving Conflict Peacefully:
Disagreements are inevitable, but Ephesians 4:26 reminds us not to let anger persist. Healthy communication leads to conflict resolution, which strengthens the bond between spouses.

Biblical Example: Priscilla and Aquila worked together in ministry and likely maintained a strong marriage through effective communication and partnership (Acts 18:2-3).

4. COMMITMENT AND FAITHFULNESS

a) A Covenant, Not a Contract:
Marriage is a covenant before God, not a temporary agreement. Malachi 2:14-15 speaks of God as a witness to the marriage covenant, emphasising the sacredness of this bond.

b) Staying Faithful in All Seasons:
Hebrews 13:4 encourages faithfulness in marriage. Whether in times of joy or difficulty, staying committed to your spouse honours God’s design for marriage.

c) Persevering Through Challenges:
Every marriage will face trials, but Galatians 6:9 urges us not to grow weary in doing good, for in due season, we will reap if we do not give up.

Biblical Example: Despite facing adversity, Isaac and Rebekah remained committed to each other (Genesis 24).

5. FORGIVENESS AND GRACE

a) Being Quick to Forgive:
Colossians 3:13 tells us to forgive one another as Christ forgave us. In marriage, holding on to grudges leads to bitterness, but forgiveness restores peace and unity.

b) Showing Grace in Imperfection:
No spouse is perfect, and we must extend grace in times of failure or misunderstanding. Ephesians 4:32 encourages us to be kind and tenderhearted, showing grace as God has shown us.

c) Rebuilding Trust:
Forgiveness is the first step toward restoring trust after hurt. Patience and consistent love help to rebuild and strengthen the relationship.

Biblical Example: Hosea’s forgiveness and restoration of his wife, Gomer, after her unfaithfulness is a powerful example of grace and reconciliation (Hosea 3:1-3).

6. PRAYER AND SPIRITUAL UNITY

a) Praying Together as a Couple:
A marriage centred on God thrives when both partners come together in prayer. Matthew 18:19 promises that where two agree in prayer, God’s will is done. Make prayer a regular part of your relationship.

b) Growing Together Spiritually:
Spiritual unity is vital for marital success. Couples should encourage each other in their faith and pursue God’s will together. 1 Corinthians 7:5 highlights the importance of spiritual intimacy in marriage.

c) Depending on God for Wisdom:
James 1:5 reminds us that God gives wisdom to those who ask. A successful marriage depends on God’s wisdom for handling challenges and making decisions.

Biblical Example: Zechariah and Elizabeth, though facing the trial of childlessness, continued in faith and prayer, and God blessed them in their marriage (Luke 1:5-7).

CONCLUSION:
A successful marriage requires love, respect, communication, commitment, forgiveness, and prayer. When couples build their relationship on the foundation of God’s Word and seek to honour Him in all they do, they will experience the blessings of a joyful and lasting union. As you apply these biblical secrets, may your marriage be strengthened and flourish according to God’s perfect design.

PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, teach me to love my spouse as Christ loves the Church.

2. Father, help us to communicate openly and honestly in our marriage.

3. Lord, give us the grace to forgive each other and extend mercy in times of failure.

4. Father, grant us the strength to stay committed and faithful to one another.

5. Lord, let Your peace reign in our marriage and remove every source of conflict.

6. Father, bless our marriage with spiritual unity and help us to grow together in You.

7. Lord, protect our marriage from any attack of the enemy and give us victory.

8. Father, help us to be an example of a godly marriage to others.

9. Lord, let our home be filled with joy, love, and Your presence.

10. Father, bless our marriage with fruitfulness and favour in every area of life.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS:
1. I declare that your marriage will be filled with Christ-like love and peace.

2. Every plan of the enemy to disrupt your marriage is cancelled in Jesus’ name.

3. Your marriage shall be a testimony of God’s grace and favour.

4. I declare that you will experience growth and success in every aspect of your relationship.

5. Every misunderstanding in your marriage will turn into greater unity and love.

6. The spirit of forgiveness and grace shall abound in your home.

7. I declare that you will walk in spiritual unity, praying and seeking God together.

8. Your marriage will be a reflection of God’s perfect design and His glory will shine through.

9. You will overcome every challenge and emerge stronger in your relationship.

10. I declare that your marriage will be blessed, fruitful, and successful in all things.

NO LONGER TWO BUT ONE

Title: NO LONGER TWO BUT ONE

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Text: Matthew 19:4-6 (NKJV
)

*"And He answered and said to them, 'Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.'”*

INTRODUCTION
Marriage is a divine institution ordained by God from the beginning of creation. It is a union that transcends the physical, joining two individuals into one spiritual, emotional, and physical entity. Today, as we gather to witness this sacred covenant, it is crucial to understand the significance of the words "No longer two but one."

1. THE DIVINE DESIGN OF MARRIAGE
In Matthew 19:4-6, Jesus refers to the original design of marriage as instituted by God in Genesis 2:24. When God created Adam, He saw that it was not good for man to be alone and created Eve as a suitable helper (Genesis 2:18). The union of Adam and Eve was the first marriage, and it set the precedent for all marriages to come.

- Unity in Creation:
God created them male and female, emphasizing the complementary nature of the husband and wife. Each brings unique qualities and strengths, and together, they form a complete unit. This unity is reflected in the words "the two shall become one flesh." It is a mystery how God joins two distinct individuals into one entity, but it is a profound truth that underpins the marriage covenant.

2. BECOMING ONE IN PURPOSE
The phrase "no longer two but one" signifies more than just physical union; it represents a unity of purpose, goals, and vision. In marriage, the husband and wife are called to walk together in agreement (Amos 3:3).

- Shared Vision:
A successful marriage is built on a shared vision and purpose. The husband and wife must align their lives with God's will and work together to fulfil His plans. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 reminds us that two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labour. Together, they can accomplish much more than they could individually.

3. ONE IN LOVE AND SACRIFICE
Ephesians 5:25-33 provides a beautiful picture of the sacrificial love that is to characterize the marriage relationship. The husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her. This love is selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional.

- Mutual Submission:
Ephesians 5:21 also calls both husband and wife to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. This mutual submission is a key component of becoming "one." It involves putting the needs and desires of the other person above your own and seeking to serve one another in love.

- Example of Christ and the Church:
Just as Christ and the Church are one, so too should the husband and wife be. The marriage relationship is a reflection of the union between Christ and His Bride, the Church. It is a sacred bond that should be nurtured and protected.

4. A BOND THAT CAN NOT BE BROKEN
Jesus emphasizes that what God has joined together, no one should separate (Matthew 19:6). Marriage is a lifelong covenant that is not to be taken lightly. It is a bond that should be cherished and guarded.

- Commitment:
In a world where commitment is often fleeting, marriage calls for a deep, unwavering commitment to one another. It requires faithfulness, perseverance, and a resolve to stand by each other through all of life’s challenges.

- Covenant Before God:
Marriage is not just a contract between two individuals; it is a covenant before God. As Malachi 2:14-16 explains, God is a witness to the marriage covenant, and He desires that it be upheld with integrity and faithfulness.

CONCLUSION:
Today, as we witness the joining of these two lives, let us be reminded of the profound mystery and beauty of marriage. The journey ahead will have its challenges, but with Christ at the centre, this union can thrive and grow stronger each day.
May this marriage be a reflection of God’s love, a testimony of His grace, and an example of the unity that He intended from the beginning. Let the words of Matthew 19:6 resonate in our hearts: *“So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”*

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of marriage and the beautiful union we celebrate today. We pray that You bless this couple, guiding them as they embark on this journey together. May their love grow deeper with each passing day, and may they always find their strength in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

DIVORCE: CAUSES, EFFECTS AND REMEDIES

DIVORCE: CAUSES, EFFECTS AND REMEDIES

BIBLE PASSAGE: MATTHEW 19:3-9

3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Note this:
The longest marriage of our time took place in America between Mr. Herbert and Mrs. Zelmyra Fisher. They were married for 86years and 290 days.
They were both born in 1905 and 1907 respectively. The marriage ended when the husband died in 2011. The wife also died in 2013. They both lived for 105 years.

The shortest marriage in the world happened in Kuwait. After the court marriage the bride tripped and fell as she was climbing the stairs and the husband said "stupid" she quickly went back to the court to dissolve the marriage.

The shortest marriage in Nigeria lasted for 7 days. It was an Islamic marriage between Ali and Aisha. The husband manhood was too big for the wife. The marriage was dissolved in Zamfara.

Note: Marriage is the union of two imperfect people. Problems are bound to arise, but patience, honestly and love will keep your marriage going.

INTRODUCTION
Divorce is ending a marriage between a husband and wife. It is the breakage of marriage vows, either by the decision of one or by the decision of both partners.
Divorce is the cessation of family relationship.
In America, it is estimated that in every 10 marriages, 7 will likely end up in divorce.
In our country today the rate at which people break their marital relationship is alarming.
Most Nigerian celebrities do not have  lasting marriages.

Today we have contract marriage where people marry for a specific period of time.
Lots of issues are fighting against marriages today because we have deviated from God's original plan.

Anyone considering divorce must have experienced months or years of struggle with their spouse. They are familiar with emotional distance, insecurity, fear, depression, anger, and perhaps betrayal. Life has become so difficult that divorce seems like the only path toward peace and happiness. Our High Priest empathizes with believers in such state (Hebrews 4:15). However, God clearly explains His reasons for esteeming marriage so highly. He says it was He who “made them one” (Malachi 2:15). Marriage was God’s idea and any deviation from His design is detestable to Him. Marriage is not just a contract; it is a covenant. This is why God hates divorce and the consequences can be grievous.

1.  GOD HATES DIVORCE

Marriage is a picture of the covenant God has with His people (1Cor.6:17) and He wants us to understand how serious it is. When a husband or wife chooses to violate the covenant of marriage, it mars and makes a mockery of the God-created concept of covenant relationship. (Rev.19:7-9; 2 Cor.11:2).

God never intended divorce to be a part of human experience and it grieves Him when we harden our hearts and break a covenant that He created (Matt.19:4-8).

Malachi 2:15 gives us another reason God hates divorce. He says He is “seeking godly offspring.” God’s design for the family was that one man and one woman commit themselves to each other for life and rear children that will understand the concept of covenant as well. Children reared in a healthy, two-parent home have a far greater likelihood of establishing successful marriages themselves.

SEVEN MAJOR CAUSES OF DIVORCE IN NIGERIA

Divorce in Nigeria is on the rise and is a major cause for concern. Divorce can occur for a variety of reasons, many of which are still being discovered.
Few Nigerians divorce in a courtroom.  Either the wife is separated from the husband, leaves unexpectedly with the children, or one of the couples separates from the other. When one or both couples insist on continuing their separate lives, the home is no longer intact. These are the top 10 reasons for divorce in Nigeria.

1. The issue of infidelity

A relationship can end when one partner leaves it to satisfy their needs, whether they be physical or sexual. Infidelity is a significant contributor to divorce. It is one of the legal reasons for divorce in addition to the longer-than-a-year separation and abuse of your spouse (mental or physical). You only share everything with the person you are married to.

The majority of sad people may even die as a result of marital infidelity because it causes so many negative emotions like anger, betrayal, hurt, and pain that are sometimes difficult to forgive and forget.

2. The lack of communication

Marriages require excellent communication, and failing to do so quickly can result in dissatisfaction and anger on both sides, which negatively affects the marriage in all respects. However, effective communication is the backbone of a healthy marriage. When two individuals are living together, they must be able to communicate their wants, as well as comprehend and make an effort to meet those of their partner.
Couples who cease communicating with one another may also feel alone and isolated and stop showing affection to one another altogether. The relationship can end as a result of this.

3. Unforgiveness

This is yet another major cause of divorce. No sin is too great to be pardoned. When one partner has vowed in his or her heart never to pardon the other for an error made, an offence committed, or injustice committed, they are unable to continue living happily together. Unforgiveness generates grief and resentment, which develops wickedness and hatred. This is the explanation for why partners are murdered in their sleep by their spouses. Without forgiveness, nothing and no one can endure in any marriage.

4. Lack of love

Every relationship, including marriage, needs to have love. Forgiveness, communication, understanding, tolerance, patience, happiness, belief in one another, compromise, the oneness of heart, and trust are all characteristics of love. Without love, marriage is merely a contract and will lack the qualities of love listed above. Only love can motivate two people to be married.

There is love between couples in today’s world, but it can be love for what and not for who. It might be a love for an eight-figure financial account or a figure-eight body. They will undoubtedly look outside to fill the void left by the absence of what they love. Thinking of your spouse before yourself is a sign of true marital love. Always put your spouse first and be willing to support them no matter what.

5. Lack of mental preparation

Anyone who doesn’t plan is planning to fail. Without mental preparation, financial, spiritual, and bodily preparedness falls short. In a marriage, a lot of unexpected things might happen. Your mental readiness will alert you to be on the lookout for the unexpected and nothing will catch you off guard.

6. Lack of courtship

Young people frequently get married without taking the necessary time to get to know each other better; instead, they simply meet, become drawn to one another, and assume they are in love. The opportunity to court someone allows you to learn more about their personality, lifestyle, and worldview. You will learn about your HIV status, whether you are both fertile if you are compatible, and other things during the courtship. Before getting married, all of these things need to be taken into account because they are also major contributing factors to divorce.

7. The issues of infertility

Nigerians have a particular attitude about having children; after two years of marriage, couples frequently worry about starting a family. Infertility is sometimes attributed to women even when the man is to blame. This can be a major source of conflict in certain marriages.
When one partner becomes fed up with the situation and decides to have children outside of the marital home, it frequently results in divorce.

v. Violent disagreement and serious quarreling
vi. Laziness
vii. Polygamy

CONSEQUENCES OF DIVORCE

There is a direct correlation between the way a man treats his wife and the effectiveness of his prayers. God does not listen to the pleas for blessing from those who have broken the covenant of marriage (I Pet 3:7).
Divorce is associated with many negative outcomes. Here are some;

Divorce is a death of a union, and therefore the death of a dream, a promise and a family unit. Everyone involved -even a perpetrator- will feel grief and loss during a divorce. If there are children involved, they will experience severe grief over the loss of being with both parents together and living under the same roof.

Divorce marks a pivotal moment in a person’s life, especially for children; life as they know it changes forever and they become different versions of themselves, adapting to new routines and new versions of their parents (who have also changed).

Children of divorced parents are more likely to experience poverty, educational failure, early and risky sexual activities, non-marital childbirth, early marriage, cohabitation, marital discord and divorce.

Following a divorce, parents and children often experience emotional and psychological problems, that can last for years, even for the rest of their lives. Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, fear of abandonment, distrust, insecurity, lack of intimacy, confusion over sexuality and/or gender, guilt, faithlessness, loneliness, bitterness, and rebellion manifest themselves in children who have lived through divorce of their parents.

Divorce matters can lead to a poor sense of judgment especially on marital issues, increase in crime, drug/alcohol addiction and even suicide attempt.

The productivity of divorcees/divorced men may reduce at work and in their service to God.

There is a chance of another divorce. Research shows that about 60% of divorcees/divorced men who remarry will divorce again. Realistically, most people carry the unresolved issues from their last failed marriage into the next marriage.

CONCLUSION
Marriage is indissoluble according to Scriptures.
Cleave, not to leave (spouse) and leave not to cleave (with parents and family).
Higher than the power of man to put asunder.
Paul gave the commandment of marriage in 1Cor. 7:10-11. let not the wife depart and let not the husband put away his wife.

Genuine love in marriage covers multitude of sins and prevents eventual break up.

If God hates divorce, believers should do everything possible, including consulting with the Author of marriage – God, to make the marriage work.
